British Sumo
Sumo is one of the world’s oldest martial arts—disciplined, spiritual, and steeped in tradition. It’s the foundation from which judo, jiu-jitsu and many others evolved

About British Sumo
British Sumo was formed by a committed group of passionate sumo supporters, experienced wrestlers, and dedicated officials —many of whom had long been involved in the sport under the previous governing structure. Their shared vision was to rebuild and redefine the future of sumo in Britain. For too long, the sport had been allowed to fade—lacking structure, clear development pathways, and national recognition. Too often, sumo was misunderstood by the public, seen more as a comic sideshow than the serious, disciplined martial art it truly is.
This new leadership set out to change that perception and put proper foundations in place. Their aim has been to build a lasting framework for athletes to train, progress, and compete—both nationally and internationally—while also promoting sumo’s rich cultural heritage. By developing clubs, fostering young talent, and creating competitive opportunities, British Sumo is working to bring the sport back into the spotlight where it belongs, with the respect and credibility it deserves.
