On Saturday, September 20, 2025,  Southampton Sumo Club and South Coast Sumo from Portsmouth held a joint training session, demonstrating the collaborative spirit that’s helping to grow the sport in the UK.

The two clubs, led by Lance Wicks (Southampton) and Chay Hext (South Coast), share a special connection. Lance, a Judo black belt, first started training under Chay, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) black belt at his club, before the Southampton club was formed. This shared history and collaboration, built on a foundation of respect for other martial arts, continues to strengthen the local sumo community.

Both clubs recently competed at the Scottish Sumo Open and are preparing for more upcoming events, including the Southern Regions Invitational in October and the prestigious British Isles Sumo Championships in January. Their hard work and cooperation are proof that teamwork makes the dream work, both on and off the dohyō.

What is Sumo? A Sport for Everyone 🤼

For those new to the sport, Sumo is a form of competitive full-contact wrestling where a “rikishi” (wrestler) attempts to force his opponent out of a circular ring called a dohyō or to touch the ground with any part of his body other than the soles of his feet.

The sport is deeply rooted in Japanese tradition and ritual, with matches often preceded by elaborate ceremonies. While it is Japan’s national sport, sumo is gaining popularity worldwide as an intense and highly technical combat sport. Interestingly, sumo is considered by many to be the ancestor of more modern martial arts like Judo and Jujutsu, which in turn gave rise to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The emphasis on throws, grappling, and control found in sumo has a direct lineage to these other arts.

Unlike the professional sumo in Japan, which is limited to male competitors, the amateur sumo scene in the UK is a welcoming and inclusive environment. These clubs are proud to be part of a movement that embraces all genders, ages, sizes, and shapes. Whether you’re a seasoned martial artist or a complete beginner, there’s a place for you on the dohyō. These clubs are part of a wider network of enthusiasts working to bring this ancient and exciting sport to a new audience.
